How does a large state university express its commitment to 21st century technology? Build an award-winning state-of-the-art Chemistry and Biological Sciences Building.
Illinois State University and the Illinois Board of Regents turned to GB&A and the highly qualified firm of Loebl, Schlossman & Hackl, Chicago, to plan, design and administer the construction of their new four-story, 180,000 sq. ft. building.
The concept of combining chemistry and biological sciences disciplines in the same building came from a collaboration of the departments of Chemistry and Biology. It was also the leadership of the University and the Board of Regents that allowed the collaborative effort to take place.
Under the direction of Dr. Sol Schulman, head of the Department of Chemistry, a new exhaust fume hood was designed and constructed, which has become a standard in subsequent facilities.
The project received the State of Illinois Madigan Award for the Best State Building of the Year. The building has received numerous other awards and has been featured in architectural and scientific journals.
